Focusing on 26 visual artists and 18 decorative artists whose work is represented in the Neue Galerie New York collection, the catalogue offers an overview of their works and situates them within the history of their reception in twentieth-century America. It also tells the stories of the numerous museum officials, patrons, art dealers, and journalists who brought these artworks to the attention of the American public. The catalogue illuminates the little-known facts of German and Austrian artists' reception in America through biographies that describe the highlights of their lives and careers as well as their presentations in the United States. A variety of catalogue essays examine such topics as the cultural context within which German and Austrian Expressionism arose, public response to museum presentations of German art, formalistic issues in Austrian decorative arts, aesthetic quests in the German decorative arts, and key moments in the American reception of German and Austrian decorative arts. This catalogue of an exhibition at the J. Paul Getty Museum--to be held from October 10, 2006, to March 25, 2007--brings together a select group of paintings from Dresden's Galerie Neue Meister, which houses one of the most significant collections of nineteenth- and twentieth-century German art. This exhibition places at its core works from the two best-known painters from Dresden: Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840), a key voice of German Romanticism; and Gerhard Richter (b. 1932), the most celebrated German artist working today. The catalogue, one of the few resources in English on the subject, will feature paintings by Carl Gustav Carus, J. C. Dahl, Otto Dix, and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff from the period between 1800 and World War I, the heyday of painting in Dresden. It will also introduce unfamiliar artists to a wider audience and juxtapose well-known painters in new ways. In August of 2008, The New York Times' Ken Johnson wrote, "Max Beckmann's 'Self-Portrait with Horn' is one of the finest treasures of the Neue Galerie... Painted in brusque, brushy strokes in high-contrast darks and lights, it depicts the artist in a black-and-orange striped dressing gown holding up a silver hunter's horn in one sausage-fingered hand. He looks sideways with an intent expression as though he had sounded a note and was awaiting an answering response. Or he may be listening for the hounds of war." Beckmann painted "Self-Portrait with Horn" in 1938, just after he and his wife fled Nazi Germany to seek refuge in Amsterdam, and it evokes the tribulations of an entire generation. This volume celebrates this painting and the special place it holds for the Neue Galerie. Art historian Jill Lloyd brings her superb scholarship to bear in tracing the work's history and its importance within the Beckmann oeuvre.
